The Lives of Children
The Lives of Children painting series evolved from reflections and remembrances of childhood while working on my 2006 installation, IN OUR NAME: Iraqi children in War. In these new paintings, a tattered dress, a waving hand, a covered face suggest fragmented memories of apartness, indecision and loss. “The Boy Who Stood Still” portrays the leaden feeling of a boy who can’t move forward and can’t move back. Other paintings, including “The Girl Who Stopped Turning” and “The Boy Who Couldn’t Breathe” depict childhood angst, foreboding and apprehension. Shown in 2007 at the John Davis Gallery, Hudson, NY, and The Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy, NY.
