Graphic Memoir – a work in progress
by Christine Heller

My graphic memoir, Father Knows Best, is a story of growing up in America in a seemingly perfect family. Under the guise of normalcy and order, my father, a WW2 paratrooper and survivor of a German prison camp, wielded power over every family member, through his expressions of rage, control, and predatory sexual behavior.

My memoir explores ideas of male domination and female empowerment; plus it demonstrates a path to autonomy for women. I was motivated to tell my story after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022. The message of my memoir is crucial for women during this time when their rights are being taken away.

This is a work I am preparing for publication: King in his House and He’s Dead, my Father is Dead, are two examples of pages from my proposed book.
